Review: Pray For the Wicked

Panic! at the Disco does it again with “Pray for the Wicked,” an album which begins on a fast, thrashing note and doesn’t stop for a breath.

A living legend, Panic! at the Disco often sets an industry standard for ingenuity in modern rock, and with every album release they seem to top everything they’ve already done. “Pray for the Wicked” is no exception, and the entire album pulsates with energy and innovation and reminds me exactly what creativity is.

The opening line is perfect for this juncture in the band’s career: “To the old and the new, we dedicate this song to you.” All at once the line acknowledges the band’s existing fan base and also realizes that “Pray For the Wicked” may be the first Panic! at the Disco album that younger listeners are exposed to.

The band shamelessly touts their success on the track ‘Hey Look Ma, I Made It’; they seem to know that they’re golden boys and they know their album is aces. “Ain’t you ready for the latest. In the garden of evil, I’m gonna be the greatest,” they claim. It’s a haughty tone, but not too haughty for Panic! at the Disco. And if the music industry is the garden of evil, they are so wicked.
