Using Your Voice

There are many ways to participate in activism; depending on the situation, your knowledge and your resources, some actions will be better for you than others. When it comes specifically to employing your voice, it is important to consider what your contribution would add to the movement. 

This article focuses primarily on the lens of voice; however, this method can also be used when determining how to participate in other actions, such as protesting, your choice as a consumer, and donating.

  1. First and foremost, take care of yourself before acting. Jumping into action without first considering the influence of your feelings can inhibit your original intention. Recognize and accept these feelings; they are important flags in guiding your exploration of your values and in prompting action. When using your voice and these feelings, however, it is important to ascertain the boundary between responding and reacting.
  2. Do your research: where are the gaps in your knowledge? What needs to be done? How could your words and message affect others and the situation? Make sure to view multiple perspectives if you are educating yourself on an issue; this not only can assist in understanding how others may respond to your words, but also help you to question your own assumptions.
  3. Using your research, think about your position and knowledge. Do you have the experience to educate others? Whether you are posting, talking with a friend or sharing information, consider whether your voice would be better served in contributing your unique perspective, or in the promotion of those who have more knowledge on the topic.
  4. Everyone can participate in critical and constructive conversations at any time. When having these conversations though, consider their purpose. Are you seeking to educate a friend? Release and cope with emotions? Lastly, who would be best to talk to about this?

In every situation, keep in mind how your actions are informed by the past, how they respond to the present amid a myriad of voices, and what effect you want them to have on the future to bring about social change.
