Sweet Art Café

This next hidden gem is one of my favorite study spots and is nestled in the heart of Orange, CA. In a small, brick-covered alley, this cafe is surrounded by other unique eats. Sweet Art Café is a community-based pastry shop and cafe, specializing in European pastries, cakes, and pies. Covered in friendly faces, the regulars often pop in just to say hi, grab a coffee and have some time to relax.

There are three big appeals to this small cafe, and they attract many members of the community who know a good spot when they see one.

  1. The pastries. Each day there are fresh treats of all kinds— croissants, danishes of rich chocolate and hazelnut, mini coconut macaroons, blueberry scones, tartlets, banana bread, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. The pies and cakes are in a league of their own, ranging from flavors as simple as apple to as complex and mouth-watering as raspberry frangipane, rosewater, or apricot. These sweet treats give the cafe its name, being handmade every day with an artistic flair. No matter which craving you pick, it will pair nicely with the next appeal.
  2. The drinks. Whether you’re a sweet tooth or just need a bit of a kick, Sweet Art has it all. From an Americano to a Breve Latte, Cappuccino, Mocha, Espresso, Macchiato, or Flat White, this cafe has all the classics. They also have some more unique drinks, such as a London Fog—which consists of Earl Gray Tea, milk, and vanilla syrup—a Matcha Tea Latte, a Chai Latte, and a Spanish Latte, a latte with condensed milk. If coffee isn’t your thing, the menu also has wonderful teas, hot chocolate, and smoothies. My personal favorite is the Chai Latte, as it gives such a nice blend of spices and comfort feels. These drinks come hot or cold, whatever your preference and the owner will be sure to give you a recommendation if you’re not sure what to order. You can get these to go or sit down and enjoy them in-house. Which brings me to the last appeal.
  3. The atmosphere. The warm sun comes through the windows, across the hanging plants, and casts a glow over these homey wicker chairs and tables. Each piece of furniture feels personal and non-uniform. At the back of the cafe, a radio plays soothing music, creating a nice environment for meeting up with a friend, studying, or dining alone. If you’re dining in, your delectable treats and drinks are served in traditional porcelain mugs, saucers, and plates. The comforting feel brings you in and allows you to leave feeling satisfied and well taken care of.

As far as cafes or coffee shops go, this is one of my personal favorites. A little further off the beaten path and often overlooked by many tourists and even locals, this treat in Orange, California is hard to beat.
