Sewing to the Rescue

There’s more we can all do to help in the fight against COVID-19 besides staying home. In fact, we can do more while staying home. It requires some sewing, but if you don’t sew already, now might be the perfect time to learn.

There are not enough masks for medical workers in this trying time, and as such, donations of handmade masks are being asked for and accepted by many different places. There are tutorials all over youtube at this point, but Joann Fabrics is likely the best resource for contributing.

On their website, Joann features tutorials in both video and pdf formats, a face mask pattern, advice on what materials to use, and other information related to the effort, all for free. If you purchase supplies from Joann, you can order online and have them shipped, or do free pickup at store (they offer curbside pickup in light of the situation).

Joann is taking measures to ensure the safety of their own workers, including practicing social distancing within their stores. They have also taken steps to accommodate workers who have chosen to take time off during this crisis, so there is no need to worry about that when buying from them. It’s not a requirement to buy from them either; there are lots of resources available online. Buying materials from Michael’s, for example, is definitely an option if you prefer.

This is something anyone can do, even if it requires some practice and learning beforehand. It not only helps keep boredom at bay, but  you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment knowing that you’re doing something to help.

We’re all in this together, and we can all do something, even on the couch or behind a sewing machine.
