Set It Off: From Angsty to Chill

Set It Off is an American rock band that recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary. The band’s success is shown through three out of four of its released albums charting on the Billboard Top 200 chart. They also have an active presence with their fans; earlier this year, they took fan-suggested lyrics to create their single, ‘Hourglass Love.’

As seen throughout the years in their albums, Set It Off’s sound has matured. Once a hardcore pop-punk band, they have now settled down their sound to what they describe as ‘orchestral pop punk.’ I believe it’s a refreshing change for the pop-punk scene that is infiltrated with multiple cover bands and angsty teenagers. Set It Off has been successful in adapting with the times. For example, compare their 2014 single, “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” with the 2016 hit “Something New”—the tone shifts dramatically from angsty to chill.

Their variability in music is why I believe that Set It Off is a band that can appeal to a variety of audiences. They sound good, they can get you to move and be active, but at the same time, you can cry angrily to their music.
