Wolfmother: It’s Essay Writing Time

There’s something about the swooning guitar and consistent drumbeat that gets my fingers moving across the keyboard. I’ve written some of my best—and by that, I mean “most passable”—papers while listening to Wolfmother or other music like it. Something hard, fast, and not commanding enough to distract me from my paper. The ticka-ticka-ticka of my keyboard joins the clashing of the drums and the shrill guitars in an orchestral harmony…

2020 New Release Highlight: Billie Eilish

My favorite single to come out this year was without a doubt from Billie Eilish titled, ‘My Future’. Not only is the melody and arrangement such an easy listen, but the lyrics are what make this song so special to me. She has a sense of candor that lets the listener in as she sings about how she is hopeful about the future…

In This Month: DJ Kool Herc Becomes President

While I steer my body through the shimmering heat, my headphones, sunglasses, and mask sealing me off from the world, I think back to another August day when the boundaries of music were buckled and expanded by a man snugly ensconced in his own headphones. He did not know it, but he was about to change the world. The date was Saturday, August 11, 1973. The man was Clive Campbell, also known as DJ Kool Herc…

Drain Gang’s Vision for the Future of Live Shows

Well into the COVID-19 lockdown, the official YouTube channel of London-based live radio network NTS uploaded an hour-long live performance featuring Bladee and Ecco2k, two members of the Swedish cloud rap collective Drain Gang. This whole “concert” shows the inventiveness of Drain Gang and it opens up a whole new world of possibilities for inventiveness in the live medium. There’s no telling what kind of creativity other artists could bring to the table if this becomes the new norm…
