Review: Suncity

“Suncity” (ft. Empress Of) is the title song from Khalid’s latest album, which was just released last week.

From the crescendoed guitar pluck to the drum heavy beat,‘Empress Of’ brings the heat to the otherwise relaxed song, through her spanish influences. The contrast between the two moods set by both Khalid and Empress Of is an ode to the current reggaeton movement. Khalid fans, don’t worry, his original sound is still maintained throughout the verses. However, the fact Khalid harmonizes with Empress Of in Spanish for the chorus just goes to show the versatility in Khalid’s voice.

“Suncity” itself is about a person longing to go back to a place without worry, which is likely his hometown. He and his partner have been struggling with their relationship, not because of their feelings but because of the circumstances. That is why he wishes to be back in Suncity, a place where he does not have to worry about a thing besides strengthening his relationship. Although the lyrics are short and sweet, when they are combined with the production, the song is brought to to life.

The song definitely has my approval. It has a certain lighthearted yet chill vibe that many artists strive for–Khalid nailed it. Next time you look for new music, you may want to consider giving “Suncity” a listen.
