Review: Mo Bamba

18-year-old Sheck Wes made the charts with his hit “Mo Bamba.” A simple song with hard beats is all anyone needs in order to get hype, and “Mo Bomba” definitely serves on that account.

Wes celebrates his own success and references his friends’ success throughout the song, making it a truly uplifting hip hop jam. The song itself is named after Mohamed Bamba, a childhood friend of Wes’ who was recently drafted to play for Orlando Magic. Sheck made this song in 20 minutes and has achieved a lot because of it; he got his name and a record deal out there, and his song is constantly played at parties. The song’s irony is not lost on its listeners— his music celebrating his success garnered him even more success.

The production on “Mo Bamba” plays a huge role in its success. The producers use the F-B tritone to build tension, followed by the infamous bass drop in the chorus, with “Fuck! Shit! Bitch!” The lyrics are simple and repetitive, and it’s easy for anyone, no matter how many times they’ve heard the song, to sing along.

“Mo Bamba” makes me feel as if I am the best version of myself; it’s no surprise that the song is topping charts as one of today’s bangers.
