Let’s Keep In Touch

The COVID-19 quarantine has left many people unexpectedly cut off from their friends, family, and co-workers. Whether you’re used to seeing your inner circle in class or at work, or even living with them as roommates, the effects of social distancing are being felt by everyone. Now more than ever it is important to maintain these close relationships in order to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness, but how you maintain them will inevitably differ from person to person. In fact, one of the most important parts of navigating quarantine relationships is figuring out which kinds of communication will work for you!

If you categorize yourself as a more extroverted person, meaning you thrive off the energy of other people and rarely feel the need for alone time, using video-call technology is a great way for you to keep in touch. Consider setting up regular calls through Facetime or Zoom so you and your loved ones can stay consistently updated, or use Netflix Party to share a screen and have virtual movie nights.

If you’re more of an introverted person and the idea of that much talking (even with people you love) seems tiring or unsustainable, consider an older form of communication: letter writing! Jot down a few sentences on how you’re doing and any updates you have so you can stay in the loop without feeling pressured to talk everyday. If you and your friends live in different cities, think about putting together a small care package with things that represent your town.

Most importantly, remember that it doesn’t matter the way you reach out, or how often—just that you make the effort you’re capable of!
