Review: Truth Hurts

Lizzo’s pop-rap single “Truth Hurts” has blown up recently. In the song, she advocates for taking care of yourself first before a relationship. She recognizes that some people may think it’s selfish to do so, which can be seen through her lyrics, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that bitch”. But if a relationship is not helping you grow as a person, Lizzo implies to just forget it. “You’re ‘posed to hold me down, but you’re holding me back. And that’s the sound of me not calling you back”. Lizzo doesn’t see the logic in putting effort into making a relationship work if it is not benefiting you and thus, is in favor of noncommittal relationships instead.

Lizzo created this song to spite her ex who was not serious and was even attempting to “break her heart”. But she felt sorry for him because“Oh, that breaks my heart, that you thought you ever had it”she was supposedly never invested in the relationship anyway. Lizzo even mentions that she’s in fact flirting with his friend. By singing about the different ways she was not committed to the relationship, she hopes that the truth hurts her ex, hence the name of the song. However, Lizzo must have been affected to an extent because she did indeed write a whole song about him.

The song itself has a bouncy beat that makes just about anyone want to bop. Her vocal ability also enhances the song tremendouslyshe uses her voice to boost the comedic lyrics. It is a satirical approach to emphasize how many relationships tend to go awry the same way that hers did.

“Truth Hurts” is a fun and relatable song to listen to and thus, I would definitely recommend it to all the ladies and guys to listen to.
