Review: Dear Insecurity

In one of his most recent single “dear insecurity,” singers gnash and Ben Abraham discuss the struggles of anxiety and the importance of overcoming them. With completely candid lyrics, each line of this song sounds like a page from a diary or even a voice inside a person’s head.

The song is written in a letter format that addresses insecurity in a different way, where the singers are talking to insecurity, rather than about it. The personification of insecurity as a cruel antagonist rather than as just an emotion, helps raise awareness and understanding of how serious and painful these voices inside our heads can be. In this song, gnash is not a singer or a celebrity, he is a normal person with normal struggles who has felt the pain that is so common among the general population.

Gnash sings about feeling physically sick from a mental mindset, not feeling good enough, and feeling like he deserves the pain of insecurity. Through “dear insecurity” gnash is able to highlight the simplicity in changing your mindset and learning to embrace imperfection.

“Dear insecurity” asks listeners to stop thinking about the “flaws” in their physical appearance, and instead focus on creating new memories and being grateful for the things we do have.
