The World Cup is a phenomenon on all different sources of social media, and Shawn Mendes–one of the biggest superstars–is showing his support of the Championship and Portugal’s team by using one of his top songs, “In My Blood,” as their new, official World Cup song.
The team and Shawn Mendes both created a music video that both highlights their successes and their challenges, thus showcasing their perseverance. The video also uses examples of people feeling down and reaching out for help; these images embody the idea that, despite going through difficult times, giving up should never be the main option. Mendes’ song “In My Blood” fits the video perfectly as it chronicles the singer’s struggles with anxiety and lyricizes his triumph over the struggle.
In the video, Mendes also sings the song in Portuguese, providing a sense of community between his country and Portugal. The gesture was a perfect representation of unity and Mendes recently told Billboard that, “I follow Portugal and England because of my parents, who are from the two countries. In the World Cup, I’m always cheering for Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my favourite player and probably one of my biggest inspirations.”
