The Only Player to Reach 85

On June 20, Cristiano Ronaldo made history by scoring his 85th international goal, which has never been done by any other player. This was his fourth goal in this FIFA World Cup and this was the first time Spain, Argentina, and Germany had failed to win their first games in a World Cup. Cristiano is setting the tone for his Portugal team, and he is letting the other teams know that he is still at the top of his game.

On the other hand, another well known player, Lionel Messi, had a disappointing game as Argentina drew against Iceland. Messi had missed a penalty kick and this pointed back to his performance in the last World Cup–Messi had failed to score a goal and this caused his team to lose the game. Even though he is known as a prolific scorer, he still struggled to even score a goal. Argentina may be the better team compared to Portugal, but if Messi keeps underperforming the team might not get far.

Lastly, soccer fans were shocked to see that Mexico had upset the formidable Germany squad; Mexico had shut down Germany by not allowing any goals to be scored on their end. If under-dogs can keep playing like this, the fans might be in store for some more upsets.

Hopefully, this World Cup can keep this level of excitement throughout its stretch.
