Embracing Femininity

Happy Women’s History Month! With the wave of feminism that has been steadily growing over the past few decades, sometimes we women might think we must always present ourselves as strong, level-headed, and fierce. For those of us that enjoy presenting as a “stereotypical, Hollywood female” (dresses, makeup, heels, the works), that can cause an internal divide—how can such a “girly” look work in tandem with such a progressive goal? I’m here to tell you that there is no shame in being the woman you want to be, no matter what you believe in.

Do I think that women should dress for themselves and not for the male gaze? Absolutely. Do I also enjoy wearing dresses, makeup, heels, and elaborate hairdos? You bet! The thing is, I wear those clothes and makeup because they make me feel good. When I “dress up,” I feel confident, accomplished—sometimes invincible; and that has nothing to do with the people looking at me. I do it to make myself happy, not anyone else.

I know it’s hard. I know our society has treated women harshly in the past, and it can be difficult to unlearn the practices and views ingrained in us as children. But the world is getting better every day, even if that progress is slow, so don’t let those worries hold you back. Embrace whatever level of femininity you possess, and live the life you love.
