Bookstores and Activism

If you are reading this article, chances are you like reading. No matter what your reading habits are, if you haven’t checked out these bookstores yet, add them to your list. You can buy from them online, or, if you live in California, visit them in person (as long as you wear a mask).

Eso Won Books is one of the oldest Black-owned bookstores in the country and specializes in books written by and for Black authors. Even in a world where Amazon reigns above all, Eso Won Books holds its own with a great selection of books for decent prices.

Ashay by the Bay has an amazing collection of Black history books, science books, other school books, and books for children of all ages. It is never too early to start reading, and if you are looking to educate your children and help them grow into responsible and inclusive human beings, here is a good place to start.

Malik Books is another bookstore promoting education and empowerment with books about antiracism, forward thinking, and feminism, particularly within the Black community.

You might be asking yourself, “What is so special about these bookstores?” They are Black-owned, and it is especially important to be supporting them right now. Not only do these stores have hundreds of fiction and nonfiction books, but they also have plenty of biographies, memoires, and other books to help educate yourself and understand how you can fight for justice and equality. Besides, most of us are stuck inside these days, so why not take the time to read new and thought-provoking books?
