“Venus Fly Trap”: Taking Control of Your Own Narrative

Since Welsh singer MARINA released her debut album The Family Jewels in 2010, the pop music sphere has been captivated by her catchy songs, unique vocal delivery, and the sharp social commentary present within her lyrics. Throughout her over ten-year-long career, the artist has used her music to tackle themes related to being a woman and the various double standards and expectations placed upon them. This is most visible in her sophomore project and arguably her most successful album, Electra Heart. The concept of female empowerment is also prevalent in her latest production, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, especially in the track titled “Venus Fly Trap.”

The second song on the previously mentioned album opens with a line encompassing the work’s central message: “Whatever you give life, you will get back/Why be a wallflower when can be a Venus fly trap?” MARINA, like many women, is encouraged to stand back and passively move through life. Instead of doing what is expected of her, she encourages people to take charge and feel empowered enough to make decisions that benefit them rather than following the patriarchy. After she states this idea, the singer continues and asserts the ways in which she has controlled her own narrative and rejected the projected or accepted societal norms. She will not allow others to change her, manipulate, or suppress her true desires in life.

This mentality, of course, does not solve all her problems or dismantle systemic sexism. However, by prioritizing herself over men and those who want to silence her, she has been more satisfied with her life overall. She possesses a sense of power—emotional and mental resilience—that no one can take away from her. Other than the impactful lyrics, the sonic elements of the piece hook you immediately upon first listening and will make you want to take action. “Venus Fly Trap’s” fast pace also perfectly captures how unapologetic MARINA is, a stubbornness she wants women to adapt for themselves. This song should be seen as a starting point or a mantra for people to be inspired on their journey to self-confidence.
