The Best Baking Hacks

What do you do when you don’t have the listed ingredients but don’t want to take another trip to the store? Don’t worry—there are easy and simple substitutions for many of the common ingredients in recipes. Also, these substitutions work for turning non-vegan recipes into vegan-friendly treats!

Apple sauce & Pumpkin puree – These can be used in place of eggs. To substitute 1 egg, use ¼ cup apple sauce or ¼ cup pumpkin puree.

Chia seeds & Flax-seed – These can be used in place of eggs as well. To substitute 1 egg, use 1 tbsp of chia seeds or flax-seed. Make sure to soak the chia seeds or flax-seed in liquid for at least 3 hours prior to using them for baking. The seeds will soak up the liquid to make a more egg-like substance.

Yogurt – Yogurt can be used in place of sour cream. Any type of yogurt works—dairy-free, regular, or Greek! This is a 1:1 substitution.

Natural Sweetener – If you want a healthier option than regular sugar, there’s a variety. You can use a 0-calorie sweetener for a direct substitution. Or, you can use honey and/or maple syrup to add sweetness.

Don’t be afraid to get creative when baking! I learned that with baking, if you don’t have the ingredients, it’s ok to make substitutions and play around with ingredients that you do have.

Happy baking!
