Pattern Rules

When it comes to patterns it’s all about how you style them, and for me, the more subtle the better.

I’m naturally a dark color girl, so the best patterns for me blend seamlessly with the colors I already like. Here are a few I can’t live without.

My absolute favorite pattern is plaid and tartan. I probably own about fifty different swatches in my closet and remain on the hunt for more.

I love them because they’re so versatile; they can be dressed down with ripped jeans and a dad flannel or dressed up with a matching yellow set inspired by Cher from Clueless.

They work across the board from vintage-inspired dresses to the more recent nineties grunge nostalgia. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with some of the patterns from Urban Outfitters, especially their cute trousers.

Another pattern I have a fond relationship with is stripes. Often when I’m shopping or Pinterest cruising for outfit inspiration, I run into adorable looks that are the 1970s inspired. This helps me try things outside my comfort zone, usually in brighter colors, and still rock an effortless look.

I am loving these striped mock neck sweaters with a classic blue jean or suede skirt. With such a bold pattern, you don’t need a lot of extra make-up or accessories to add to your look. Add some tights or thigh-high socks for a mid-2000s twist.

And how could I not mention houndstooth? It looks like plaid but has a signature little stitch pattern that’s classy in every outfit.

This can be a country club look with a tan and black skirt and a cream turtleneck or for a more relaxed look with a blazer over a pair of black jeans.

I think it’s a print that’s always sophisticated and cool, especially in the late summer and autumn months. I always love it with a dark or berry lipstick and a leather handbag.
