The Single “Good Days”

In honor of Women’s History Month, I’d like to recommend SZA’s single, “Good Days.” Since her debut album release Ctrl in 2017, I’ve been keeping up with every single she has released since, and SZA has never disappointed.

The song “Good Days” was released in December 2020, when the future felt uncertain in the middle of the pandemic.

“All the while, I’ll await my armored fate with a smile. I still wanna try, still believe in good days,” SZA sings. Her mystical voice rises with beautiful melodies, bringing warm and sunny tones that can brighten even the worst of days.

SZA also recently came out with a music video for “Good Days” that was released on March 5th, 2021. The music video starts off with positive energy layered in warm, earthy tones. Most of the video’s plot is of SZA sprouting from the earth in the companion of mushrooms. A metaphor of her growth, creativity, and perseverance. The music video isn’t as cheesy as it sounds, however. Especially not with her meaningful and unique lyrics that can change one’s perspective into something positive.

As SZA sang, “Half of us chasin’ fountains of youth and it’s in the present now,” I interpreted it as how youth doesn’t only mean partying and chasing after love. Instead, it can be about nurturing the mind, imagining, and making dreams come true.

To emphasize this point, my favorite lyric in the song is “good day living in my mind.” The lyric may be simple, but it resonates deeply. Sometimes, a moment of stillness is just as healthy and restorative for the mind, body, and soul.
