The Oscars Proved That Corsets Are Tighter than Ever!

As a proud owner of three corset tops, I think they’re highly fashionable and incredibly in style. After Oscars night, I have evidence that my opinion holds true. Corsets will continue thriving in 2023.

Women have donned corsets since Ancient Greek times. According to the Corset Story Website, corsets became a common undergarment during the 16th century and eventually evolved into a fashion must-have during the Victorian Era. Originally intended to be a bodice worn underneath clothing for shape and support, corsets have now become their own versatile version of a top or a dress.

Stars like Zoë Saldaña to Jamie Lee Curtis showed off the corset’s versatility at this year’s Oscars red carpet.

Halle Bailey, who stars in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, looked stunning in a blue corseted gown made of tulle.

Mindy Kahling’s corset dress was quite different from Halle’s but still equally elegant. Her bodice was sheer, allowing the white boning of the corset to make a statement.

These celebrities proved that there are many ways to incorporate a corset into your style. Here are some different types of corsets you can choose from:

Overbust corsets mainly support the back and breasts. These corsets have the most coverage and can be worn over shirts or as a top itself.

Underbust corsets stop just under the breast. They are perfect to pair with a tight undershirt or even a loose blouse.

Bustier corsets are the most adaptable in terms of everyday wear. Some are attached to dresses, while others are strictly tops. Dress bustier corsets up with a silk skirt or black slacks. For a more casual look, bustier corsets pair great with jeans as well.

Waspie corsets go strictly around the waistline. These are great if you want to cinch the waist of a flowy dress or button-up blouse. They also give off major pirate energy if your secret aspiration is to look like the captain of a ship. No judgment there!

Urban Outfitters has a wide selection of corsets to choose from. Its “Modern Love” corsets are my favorite. PacSun and Princess Polly are also great shops to check for corsets too. Cider even has an entire section of its website dedicated to more affordable corsets.

Now is the time to give corsets a shot. As your self-appointed corset enthusiast, I highly encourage you to do so. Happy shopping!
