The Most Important Meal of the Day

Let’s be honest, we all love food. There is nothing like that perfectly satisfying and delicious meal that is exactly what we want at exactly the right moment. The sad truth is that it is hard to find the time or money to eat like that every day. That is absolutely fine, but you should always prioritize breakfast.

I know, we are all busy and usually the most convenient thing in the morning is to gobble down a bowl of cereal or a smoothie or a pastry while in the Starbucks drive-thru. But when you can, you should try to do better. There is a reason breakfast is called the most important meal of the day.

When you eat your first meal, there is still the entire day ahead of you, so you should make it count. You need the most calories in the morning so you have the energy to tackle every task awaiting you when you leave home. A good meal in the morning boosts brain power. Plus, your body has essentially been in a fasting state for (hopefully) 8 hours or more by the time you get up. If all you give it is one little banana or a very-sugary pastry with no nutritional value, you will regret it later. We all know how it feels to go to class or work on an empty stomach, or to run on nothing but a sugar high and eventually crash hard.

Maybe you resolve to wake up earlier so that you have time to cook an egg with some toast and fruit. Maybe you look at the nutritional value of all the Starbucks breakfast foods and find something that will actually sustain you (like the spinach, feta, and egg white wrap). Maybe you just toss some overnight oats in the fridge (one of my personal favorites). Whatever you decide to do, stop skimping on breakfast.

Besides, who doesn’t want an excuse to eat more?
