The Four Types of Diversity

As a way to inspire and encourage our understanding of diversity, today I want to discuss the four general types of diversity. Knowing more about diversity helps us appreciate and respect all forms of diversity. Ultimately, this can help create a better future for the world.

While some forms of diversity are visible (exterior/physical), others are not. The types of diversity are:

  1. Internal Diversity – situations a person is born into (race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, physical (this can change at any point of a person’s life) or mental ability, etc.)
  2. External Diversity – situations that a person is not born into/with. Influenced by people’s surroundings (appearance, education, location, personal interests, life experiences, socioeconomic status, etc.)
  3. Organizational Diversity – the characteristics that differentiate two people within a workplace (place of work, employment/management status, seniority, etc.)
  4. Worldview Diversity –  A general view that individuals align with; changes over time (political views, moral compass, opinion/outlook on life, etc.)

To conclude, there are still so many ways to increase our knowledge on diversity and make the changes in our day to day life to improve life for everyone. Hopefully, in the near future the world will be a safer place for all people.
