In the stuffy heat of summer, the best workouts tend to be the kind that don’t feel like workouts. It is often easiest to burn calories by simply getting out of the house and doing exciting activities.

Rather than hitting the gym or running on a treadmill, try seizing the opportunities that the perfect summer weather provides by spending time outdoors, exercising in the golden sunshine and warm breezes. The beach provides a brilliant backdrop for many great summer activities. Playful waves serve as a refreshing reward after exhausting and challenging runs on the shifting, sandy ground. Also, beach soccer is a simultaneously fun and tiring activity that can reduce the risk of scrapes and other injuries typically associated with field soccer.

In order to avoid the scorching sun at midday, morning runs around the block can be a useful method to wake up and start the day off right. In addition, hiking is a fun activity that can leave anyone feeling absolutely exhausted by the end of the day. Depending on the region, trails may even lead to rock-climbing areas, refreshing rivers, or picturesque overlooks. Not only does hiking burn calories– it also provides an opportunity to get in touch with nature and channel a more adventurous spirit.

In the dog days of summer when the heat gets to be too much and the motivation to exercise starts to dwindle, simply visiting local attractions is an often underrated form of exercise. Checking out theme parks or carnivals is a guaranteed way to have fun and walk around.

Also, a full day of museum exploration is an interesting way to get those steps in, especially while walking amongst some of history’s greatest artifacts or technology’s greatest achievements! Because many museums are indoors and air conditioned, they provide a perfect environment to stay cool while burning some calories. Another way to take advantage of the summer season while staying indoors is to have a dance party to the upbeat summer anthems of the year.
