Staycation in Style This Spring

March is here, which indicates the halfway mark of the semester…and spring break! If you’re like me, sometimes we plan for a fun-filled trip to Cancun, Florida, the Bahamas, or anywhere with an ocean. However, with time and budget restrictions, that can seem out of reach. However, there are many outdoor activities you can do in your hometown that can be entertaining without draining your wallet.

Let’s explore some ideas.

Idea #1: Have a picnic in the park, or on the beach

  • Packing some fruits, sandwiches, and some ice-cold lemonade is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and take a breather.

Idea #2: Take a walk/hike through a nature trail, or around your neighborhood

  • During our regular schedules, we can sometimes overlook the areas around us. Strapping on those walking shoes and heading out to get some exercise and fresh air is a great and productive way to spend your day.

Idea #3: Have a movie night under the stars

  • Whether using a laptop or projector, outdoor movies are a guaranteed way to share some laughs and enjoy a night in while spending the night out in the comfort of your own backyard.

Idea #4: Visit a farmers’ market

  • Farmers’ markets are great places to meet community members, find fresh ingredients for a nutritious meal, and rock a stylish outfit for some pictures.

Idea #5: Try out a new sport!

  • From basketball to volleyball, to stretching, or even going for a bike ride. These are all great options for feeling energized and enjoying the outdoor space.

Now that we’ve discussed some ideas for a nice staycation in nature, I should also mention the health benefits that come from being outdoors, since there are quite a lot.

  • Boosts vitamin D level
    • Sunlight exposure can strengthen our bones, boost our immune system, and support safe cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
  • Improves sleep
    • If tossing and turning is a typical night for you, then consider burning off that excess energy during the day, regulating body temperature, and producing more melatonin (or sleep hormone) can all help you get your proper Zs.
  • Helps keep you in shape
    • The word “exercise” can sometimes sound like a chore. Gardening, skateboarding, or playing with your dog are ways to exercise daily and ensure your body is in healthy shape.

The bottom line is that there are so many benefits to being outdoors, so why not embrace it this spring break without the financial burden while also bettering our health and wellness?
