Spring Cleaning: How to Declutter and Reorganize

It’s officially spring! After a long winter, one of my favorite things to do is to freshen up my living space with some spring cleaning. Read on to see my tips on how to declutter and reorganize.

1. Purge Old Items

First and foremost, any important part of decluttering involves a serious purge of old items. I have definitely fallen into the habit of unnecessarily hoarding things in the past, but I slowly realized how much space these items took up. The good news is that it’s easy to rid ourselves of clutter—we simply have to be willing to part ways with things in our home that no longer serve us.

One of the easiest ways to start is to tackle one small space at a time, such as your closet. Then you can evaluate each item to see if it still makes sense to keep it. If you haven’t worn or used the item in a year or more, then it’s pretty obvious that you most likely won’t have use for it in the near future as well.

2. Reorganize Items That You’re Keeping

After purging all of the old items, it’s time to reorganize everything that you’re keeping. Rather than following checklists or guidelines that you find on the internet, I highly suggest reorganizing based on ease of access for you. It’s important to structure your living space in a way that makes it easy for you to access the things that you wear or use daily, but it’s equally important to make sure that this structure allows you to easily put things back, too. That way, you’ll be able to maintain a clean space and save a lot more time when it’s time to reorganize again!

3. Give Everything Its Rightful Place

One of the best ways to make sure that your living space never gets too cluttered is to designate an assigned place for every item in the house. For instance, have a shelf specifically for your handbags or backpacks and return these items to these spots every night after you get home. Keep a pen holder or pencil case on your desk, so you don’t have pens or pencils rolling around your office space.

There are so many ways to organize your home! What are some of your favorite decluttering tips?
