Studies show that Generation Z, or anyone born between 1997-2012, use social media for about 4.5 hours a day. This is compared to millennials, the generation before Gen Z, who use social media for 3.8 hours a day. What caused this huge increase in social media use, and why is social media such a huge part of Gen Z’s life?

Social media has grown tremendously with Gen Z due to the efficient and convenient ability to connect with others. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat allow for individuals to not only communicate with their friends and family, but also view the pictures and videos that they are taking. It’s a great way to see your friends and family’s best memories and observe what is going on in their life. Additionally, social media is another way for Gen Z to stay connected with the rest of the world and learn helpful tips and ideas from others. Many people post product reviews on social media, allowing for others to discover new products that they might have never heard about otherwise. For instance, I recently purchased the Dyson Airwrap Styler for my hair due to the positive reviews I have seen on TikTok. I would have never known about this curling iron without the help of social media.

Another prominent part of social media is social media influencers. Social media influencers are individuals who use social media platforms to express themselves creatively. TikTok has recently been a huge platform for social media influencers. Influencers post dancing/singing videos, POV acting videos, “get ready with me” videos, and so much more. TikTok’s popularity has largely grown due to the creative freedom that its users have. Many individuals show off their hidden talents on TikTok as well. For instance, I follow a girl who posts videos of herself doing archery, and it is very impressive to see her showcase her talent and read all the positive feedback she receives.
