We’ve all been therethat big assignment or paper you’ve been putting off for the past two weeks is due tomorrow, but for some inexplicable reason, you just can’t stop watching cat videos or scrolling through Instagram.

In the past, I’ve found myself in the above scenario more times than I can count. Recently, however, I’ve been using Screen Timea built-in function in iOS devices that monitors usage, schedules downtime, and sets limits across all devicesto help keep myself in check.

With Screen Time, I can track my usage, and I can also set personalized limits using the Downtime and App Limits features. This helps me focus on the task at hand and also prevents mindless browsing on the web or social media apps. Another big plusfor those of you who own multiple Apple devices, Screen Time also allows you to set limits across all devices, which helps you maximize productivity.

To access Screen Time, you don’t have to download any additional apps or software. Just go to System Preferences in your MacBook or iMac, or Settings in your iPhone or iPad, and Screen Time will be one of the options that you can click on.

Once you’re in Screen Time, you can look through App Usage, Notifications, Pickups, Downtime, App Limits, Communication, Always Allowed, and Content & Privacy. All of these are very useful features, but I tend to use the Downtime and App Limits features the most.

The Downtime function is my absolute favorite because it allows me to block off periods of time in my day, so I can’t use any apps or browse the internet. This forces me to only focus on my assignment or paper. The App Limits function is another great feature since it sets limits on specific apps or entire categories of apps, like social media apps. Without the temptation of Instagram or TikTok being just a click away, I’m able to focus on getting things done.
