Scarlett Begonia: A Breath of Fresh Air, Literally

The Scarlett Begonia philosophy is “to provide Santa Barbara with a restaurant that showcases progressive modern food, using sustainable, organic, high quality ingredients coupled with innovative cooking to be one of the most food-centric restaurants around.” Scarlett Begonia uses this mission statement to guide and establish its unique image.

A breath of fresh air in different ways: unique dishes and exclusively outdoor seating! Located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, Scarlett Begonia is tucked away in a private courtyard. Passing by on the street, one might miss it. However, beautiful flowers and fountains greet the lucky ones who do enter.

All of the patio tables are topped with elegant cups, candles, and cutlery. The space seems highly inspired by French chateaus or Italian villas. Despite Santa Barbara’s chilly weather, there’s no reason to be turned off by outdoor seating. I, myself, was rubbing my arms with cold when the attentive waitress brought me a warm, soft blanket to put on my legs! The attention to detail here is really impressive.

Now onto the food! Breakfast and lunch is served daily from 9AM to 2PM. The menu changes seasonally, but I ordered the highly suggested Open Faced Burrata Sandwich (pictured above). This seemingly normal entrée featured grilled blueberry walnut sourdough, heirloom tomatoes, prosciutto, burrata, mint, and parsley chimichurri. YUM! Other popular dishes are the biscuit sampler, Yukon Gold Cinnamon Roll, and Strawberries and Cream French Toast. Signature pastries are made fresh each morning and are always changing! Ask your server about that day’s sweet selection and order one to share (or eat yourself!).  When in Santa Barbara, do yourself and the environment a favor by dining at this hidden gem.
