Told through a format that combines personal journaling and police reporting, Tamora Pierce’s novel Terrier following the gifted and clever Beka Cooper is sure to hook readers from the beginning.

Beka Cooper has always wanted to be a “Dog,” or a member of Corus’s crime-fighting law enforcement organization. Upon entering training as a “Puppy,” Beka is assigned to work with two of the most legendary Dogs in the city, both of whom she has looked up to her entire life. Though they are disgruntled over having to train a newbie, Beka soon proves her usefulness, and when it comes to solving the latest case, it seems Beka’s unique combination of gifts and cleverness could be the key to saving the city from a faceless villain.

Set in an, at times, old-fashioned world that views magic with superstition, Tamora Pierce creates fierce and inspiring female protagonists that portray accurate representations of multi-faceted yet often underestimated individuals. Pierce’s characters are diverse, unique, and intelligent, providing a fully three-dimensional cast in addition to a well-written plot.

The first of a series that will enchant readers with its fantastic yet down-to-earth storytelling, Beka Cooper is just the first of a long line of strong female characters that leave a legacy Pierce should be proud of.
