Resume: Internships, Jobs, and Volunteering

Managing volunteering, jobs, and internships are an important part of our professional health. Many factors play a role in these decisions that help individuals focus on what is best for them. So how do we pick?

When searching and applying for jobs and internships, consider if:

  • It benefits your future, such as growing skills, aligning with a career you are exploring, or is a stepping stone to help you get your desired position later.
  • It benefits your personal satisfaction and growth. For example, maybe you are going into business, but you also love to work at animal shelters — that counts! Experiences like these build who you are.
  • You need it for your financial situation or a requirement. If you need a job or an internship, often there is another goal driving you. If this is the case, try to set realistic boundaries and supports to protect your original intent as well as your mental health.

Setting boundaries is necessary so you do not get caught in a landslide of constantly trying to adjust to a job, internship, or volunteering position that could end up cutting into what you truly care about. Ask yourself:

  • How much time will it take? Is there a conflict?
  • Will it work with your school and other goals?
  • How does it make you feel? Will you be motivated?
  • How much do you want it and why? What would you—and what would you not—sacrifice for it?

This is especially important to consider with jobs. Be critical of what the responsibility will take and if it is worth it, or if you could have a more beneficial experience elsewhere. This will also save you time so that you apply to only your best options, not every job under the sun.

Remember that this process is unique to every person. Everyone has different circumstances, goals, wants, and boundaries. What you need to do is reflect and weigh all of these, and this will help you prioritize so you can apply for opportunities that benefit your growth and future.
