Relationships In Books

I love to read. It gives me an opportunity to escape whatever problems are going on in my life and enter the lives of fictional characters.  I especially love reading books that contain a romantic journey between two characters. One of my favorite book series is the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. Two characters, Rhysand and Feyre, go through a romantic journey over the span of four books. Watching their characters grow together allowed me to see what a healthy, non-toxic relationship looks like.

The main character, Feyre, suffered a lot of trauma in her life. In the first book in the series, she is in love with Tamlin. However, as the books continue, Feyre realizes that Tamlin does not treat her with respect and acts as if she is inferior to him. He treats her as more of an object that he owns than a human being. Feyre then meets Rhysand, who treats her as an equal and not someone who is inferior to him just because she is a woman. Through reading about this relationship, I realized that in many cases, people ignore the red flags in a relationship because they believe that the way they are being treated is what they deserve. However, as shown with Feyre’s journey from Tamlin to Rhysand, it is important to know that you deserve someone who treats you with respect.

Reading books like A Court of Thorns and Roses shaped my view on relationships. No relationship is perfect, however, a healthy relationship is one where you and your partner can have honest, open communication and treat each other with respect and love.
