Netflix’s Most Watched, Non-English Show

Binge-watching has been a favorite pastime for a lot of people, and having to stay holed up in our homes because of the pandemic has not helped much. Streaming services like Netflix have a plethora of different and wonderfully made movies and shows, and are constantly updating and adding more. Something great about Netflix is its international shows, which are well-written and original. Popular international shows include Spanish teen drama, Elite, Netflix’s first original German series, Dark, and the Spanish heist thriller, La Casa de Papel.

La Casa de Papel, or Money Heist as it’s called in English, follows a band of criminals as they, following the plan of a criminal mastermind who goes by the name of “The Professor”, break into the Royal Mint of Spain, taking it and its inhabitants hostage, with the goal of printing 2.4 billion euros. Staying on the outside, The Professor deals with the police and any problems that arise that might put in peril the team that’s inside.

The show hit critical acclaim, inspiring protests and even robberies with the show’s themes of freedom and rebellion. People worldwide would wear the trademark red jumpsuits and dali masks of the heisters and sing “Bella Ciao,” the old Italian anti-fascist song that the show revitalized as its theme. Despite its initial lack of success, La Casa de Papel getting picked up by Netflix sent it into the eyes of the world and gave it the boost it needed to become an incredibly successful and well known show.

After four seasons, with each season more dramatic and thrilling than the last, fans are excited for the fifth and final season of the show, which has been confirmed. Who knows what awaits us with this next season, but it is sure to be awesome.
