My Comfort Songs and Books

There are many books and songs that bring me comfort when I need a pick-me-up. I associate several with my childhood, or a happy memory.

The first thing I do when feeling down is listen to music. Growing up, I was a huge fan of Miley Cyrus. I would dress like Hannah Montana in elementary school, and would spend hours watching her concerts. Therefore, putting on throwback Miley Cyrus songs always puts me in a good mood.

When I was 6 years old, my friends and I would get together and sing karaoke to all of Miley Cyrus’ songs. Now, listening to her old songs brings me back to that moment. My favorite song of hers to listen to is “The Climb”. It became my favorite song when I was 7, and still is to this day. The song has such a positive message behind it: although there will be struggles, never give up and appreciate the journey you are on. Listening to “The Climb” never fails to make me feel happier and lighter.

I used to love reading in elementary and middle school, but as I got to high school, I found less time to do so. However, when quarantine started, I got back into reading. I started off by reading fantasy books because of my love for fantasy as a kid. My comfort series is Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. The Shatter Me series is the first book series I have gotten into in a long time, especially because rereading it makes me feel happy and brings me comfort. Another comfort read of mine is It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. I read this book whenever I want something quick to read since the Shatter Me series is 6 books and 4 novellas long. It Ends With Us has a powerful message about the struggles of dealing with abuse in relationships, and I love being able to see the perspective of someone in this type of situation.

Everyone has different comfort shows, movies, books, and songs. When I feel down, I tend to lean towards books and songs. An old Miley Cyrus song, the Shatter Me series,  or It Ends With Us can always lift my mood and help me feel less stressed.
