Music for Mental Health

Something that often slips people’s minds in the chaos of everyday life is mental health. It can take a conscious effort to put yourself before tasks that you need to check off throughout the day, especially because taking care of yourself often requires much more time and patience. It is for this exact reason that mental health frequently gets put on the back burner, left to be ignored until you have become completely burnt out.

The purpose of Mental Health Awareness Month is to draw people’s attention to their mental health and to make sure that they don’t burn out. For example, if work is stressing you out, it is important to take a step back and remind yourself that work isn’t everything and that making sure you are okay is the top priority. It is also a wonderful opportunity to cut toxic behaviors, people, or things out of your life.

The good news is that it is never too late to change your behavior to serve yourself, nor is it selfish to do so. You should never have to sacrifice a part of yourself to please the world, and if that is the case, you owe it to yourself to give yourself the chance to get back to who you truly are.

There are many activities that allow people to express themselves and center their focus, allowing the many worries of life to be momentarily lifted off their shoulders. Some people use exercise, while others use a more creative approach, such as drawing or baking. Whatever it may be that allows your soul to come alive, it is important to set aside time to allow yourself that pleasure.

My passion is music. Listening to certain songs makes me feel alive again, especially in the darkest of times. And the greatest thing about music is that it can be listened to while you work on other passion projects, allowing for the ultimate release of serotonin. The following is a list of my favorite songs regarding mental health:

  1. “Superheroes” The Script
  2. “Don’t You Worry Child” Swedish House Mafia
  3. “Sun Is Shining” Axwell Ingrosso
