Miss Representation: Still Relevant Today

Today, America is plagued with many questions regarding how it can erase systemic sexism once and for all: how can we make sure female voices are not only heard, but have influence?, and how do we ensure the next generation of women are born into a country that not only supports femininity, but encourages it? The documentary Miss Representation tackles all of these questions and more.

Aired in 2011, Miss Representation explores the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence today. The documentary discusses how this dangerous trend shows itself through a deprecating representation of women in media, whether it be through the popularization of unattainable body image or the disparaging roles constantly allotted to women.

While female-focused in nature, Miss Representation is a documentary everyone should see. The film features testimonies from countless young girls and field professionals, allowing viewers to understand modern sexim through the stories of modern women themselves. Personally, hearing the voice of a teenage girl crack as she shares her personal experience with anorexia is what convinced me that these are stories worth hearing.

This documentary is bold and modern in nature, honest and painful in heart; most of all, though, this documentary is timeless. Don’t just watch Miss Representation–learn from it. Realize that it is still relevant to the world we live in today.
