Matanuska Glacier: You Won’t Sweat on this Hike

This past July, I backpacked through Alaska for two weeks. After landing in Anchorage, my first adventure was to Matanuska Glacier. It was a quick drive away, yet dramatically different from the city I flew into. With a thick forest surrounded me from every direction, breathing in the air was a cleansing sensation, unfamiliar to the Orange County atmosphere I’ve gotten used to.

The craziest sight was a gargantuan, glowing mass of snow. 27 miles long and 4 miles wide, this massive stretch of glacier is home to a wild adventure: Glacier Trekking. Once I put on the spiked shoes and helmet, two friendly professionals lead me and a group through the ice and cold for a hike like no other. The spikes of my shoes crunched into the ice with each step while the freezing air from the glacier numbed whatever skin is showing. Though it was bitterly cold (yes, even in July!) the rush of adrenaline kept me comfortable.

The water pouring through some of the crevices are an intense blue. Small pools of water are so deep that scientists can’t gauge how far the water goes down. The guides expertly brought me to beautiful lookout points perfect for Instagram photos.

I highly recommend this excursion if you find yourself in Alaska. Make sure to wear waterproof clothing as this state is green for a reason! Also, sunscreen is a must. The sun reflects off of the glacier and will cause a gnarly burn. Coming prepared will help you fully enjoy your Alaskan adventure!
