The latest entry into the acclaimed list of Spider-Man films, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a great addition, and an absolute joy to watch. It follows Miles Morales, a young Brooklyn teen. He develops powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider in a subway and stumbles upon a fight between the real Spider-Man and the evil Kingpin, and a plot to open a portal to a multiverse of parallel universes. This introduces several versions of Spider-Man into our world, as well as the threat of a portal opening under Brooklyn that could swallow the city whole. Miles must fight to fit in with the professionals and rise above himself to save the city and the people he loves.

Spider-Verse is a film that’s very hard to fault. The most impressive element is the animation. It’s one of those films that’s so beautiful that you could frame some of the shots and hang them in your home. The animators make great use of the city’s lights and colors and amplify it to create a gorgeous effect. This film is just pure eye-candy. And while you could watch this film on mute, you shouldn’t, because the story, characters, and conflicts are all genuinely interesting, making the film that much more entertaining. Even the villain, Kingpin, has depth.

The film’s great soundtrack, solid character arc, simple, genuine theme, and some truly funny lines leave very little to complain about. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was undoubtedly one of the best movies of the year, and one I’ll definitely be revisiting in the future.
