Inclusion in Hamilton

Recently, I was able to see the musical Hamilton in Los Angeles. It was such an amazing performance, and I’d recommend it to everyone. While it wasn’t the original cast, these actors are incredibly talented. Their singing and acting skills made the show shine and impacted the overall storyline.

The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton due to the fact that he is often forgotten and not talked about. While this story is about the founders of the United States, the main characters are played by Black actors. Overall, I really liked this change. Even though this depicts the life of white men, I enjoyed the fact that the director of the musical prioritized the inclusion of all races to lead in the musical. I once watched an interview with Suzan-Lori Parks, a talented screenwriter, who was asked why she wrote her play Topdog/Underdog. As a Black female author, she answered by saying that it’s important to create opportunities for Black actors to appear on stage, practice something they love, and create change within the community. Seeing as the director of Hamilton chose to do the same, I think this is a great way to celebrate diversity and humanity.

If you have the opportunity to see this show, you will not be disappointed. You will not only fall in love with the story and the actors, but you will be supporting musical theater and the diversity within.
