Homework Success

Despite everything that is happening right now, life still goes on. For many of us that means classes and homework. You should always make an effort to do the best you can with your homework as often as possible. Here are some tips to help you not only get that A, but also really learn.

  1. Practice engaged reading. Highlight or underline words or phrases, annotate the margins, look up facts, ask questions, take notes. Do whatever you can to make sure you are really paying attention while reading, instead of doing the bare minimum. If you are like me and prefer not to write in your books, you can either use sticky notes or find an electronic version.
  2. Always play to your strengths and interests. There are times you will be tempted to choose a topic for an essay or project because it seems easier, but if you aren’t excited about it, you will struggle. In the long run, it is easier and more rewarding to focus on what you are genuinely passionate about.
  3. Take your time. I am someone who usually likes to get things done as soon as possible, but there are times when it is more valuable to take a break. Write a draft, step away for an hour or longer, and then return. Most of the time you will either see something you didn’t before or realize there is a better way to complete your task. Fresh eyes work wonders.
  4. Ask for help. There is absolutely no shame in knowing you need assistance to get the job done, whether that means talking to classmates, tutors, or the professor.

Most importantly, keep in mind the reason you are taking these classes and learning these things. Something about the subjects interest you, even if they are base requirements you have to take. Find that thing that gets your blood pumping and embrace it. Let it fuel and motivate you to be the best student you can be.
