Holiday Safety

The festivities of the holidays are often accompanied with a rise in hospital visits; it is estimated that about 5,800 individuals are hospitalized every year just due to decorating-related incidents. With the rise in COVID cases, this year it is especially important to stay safe and out of the hospitals. Here are some tips to be safe this holiday season:

If you go on a drive to see lights, have a designated driver, keep the windows up, and drive defensively; in addition to the weather complications, statistically, drivers are more rushed and emotional during holidays. Even on drives, make sure to always bring a mask just in case your car breaks down or you need to get out for any reason.

  1. When decorating, make sure that heavy decorations and ornaments are secured so they do not fall if they are bumped. Block off trees and poisonous plants from small children as well as pets to make sure they do not accidentally eat pines, leaves or even pieces of ornaments.
  2. Check light strings for wear and tear, and replace when needed. If you are reaching somewhere high, make sure your ladder is secured and have someone spotting you.
  3. When cooking, make sure to wash hands, follow directions, and use thermometers to check the temperature of your meat. Holiday cooking can get really busy, so do not forget to turn off your ovens, burners and cooking appliances when you are done.
