Happy Pride Month!

Let’s take this month to appreciate all people and spread love. I am grateful to live in such a diverse and liberal community, surrounded by LGBTQ+ friendly neighbors, family, friends, and community. However, I know that in a lot of areas, there is a lack of support for the LGBTQ+ community. I believe wholeheartedly that each person has the right to love whoever they want, regardless of their gender and sexuality. I believe that each person has the freedom to choose their form of expression, and so I support the LGBTQ+ community.

I urge you to be a leader in your community, find ways to support these amazing people and be inclusive.

Here are some ways that I show support:

Being Attentive – Sitting back and listening to people who are LGBTQ+. Listening to their stories and offering support, comfort, and love. Appreciating their stories and their courage to share. Showing empathy through words and actions and displaying unconditional love.

Don’t Assume – Don’t assume a person’s gender just by their physical characteristics. I learned the importance of asking for pronouns as a form of courtesy. There is no identifiable “type” to gender nor sexuality, so don’t assume!

Speak Up – Educate people who are being offensive towards the LGBTQ+ community. If you hear a slur, or if you hear/see bullying and stereotyping, educate the person and speak out.

Activism – Join in on a march or demonstration of activism. Especially during the month of June, there will be many that you will be able to attend. Make posters and signs and march alongside this amazing community, and show your support.

Donate – Donate to foundations that support the LGBTQ+ community. There are many nonprofit organizations that fund the LGBTQ+ community. There are also volunteering opportunities for those who want to donate their time instead of money. Either way, donate!

These are just a few of the ways that I show support for the LGBTQ+ community. Many of my friends identify as LGBTQ+, so it is very important for me to show them my love and support.
