Grocery Tips for Broke Students

If you’re a student like me, you know the financial struggles. Grocery shopping is step 1 into adulthood. The question is, how to shop well but thrifty? As a full-time independent student with a part-time job that pays minimum wage, let me give you some tips:

Know the deals – Know the weekly deals at your local grocery store. I download the apps on my phone so that I can be sure not to miss the weekly deals. I try to buy items that are on sale for the week to save me some money. It’s amazing how much deals can save you. They really add up!

Stock up – Stock up on sale items. If there’s a sale going on for your favorite products, make sure to stock up. Most things are freezer-friendly, so you can buy in stock and put them in your freezer so they don’t rot.

Make a list – Make a list of ingredients you’re going to need and stick to it! It’s easy to get carried away and put extra stuff in your cart, but having a list keeps you focused on only the things you need.

Know your stores – We all know that some stores are pricier than others. Two stores can have the same exact thing, but the price can differ. For example, I’ve noticed that fruits and veggies tend to be cheaper at Trader Joe’s, but Ralph’s frozen section can be larger in quantity and cheaper. Be smart about where you shop!

Budget – Have a budget in mind before going shopping. Calculate how much money you want to spend per week and per month on groceries and food. This way, it will keep you responsible when it comes to money spending.

I hope these tips helped! Also know that treating yourself to a nice meal or dessert once in a while should always be a part of your plan!
