Gatekeeping Hidden Gems

We all have a fascination for hidden gems, but is this fascination turning into something more or less toxic? Once we find something great, it’s human nature to want to guard and protect it. It is my worry that this may be taken a little too far sometimes. Gatekeeping around hidden gems has become a toxic form of cultural guarding.

With the rise of social media, more of these beloved hidden gems have been moved to the spotlight, allowing more people to enjoy these places and things. However, with sharing these gems comes a sense of elitism. I have seen a lot of this elitism on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. I understand this need to guard and protect the things we love, but I don’t see why we can’t all enjoy them while maintaining a respect for them and others.

I have always enjoyed finding hidden spots to explore, new music, books, or tv to entertain me, or experiences I never expected. I’ve never felt the need to hide my secret joys but I do remain conscious of protecting them. What do you think? Does gatekeeping hidden gems help preserve them, or do you think we all deserve to enjoy them with respect for others?
