“Everyday we’re surrounded by people who ask how we’re doing, but when surgeons ask how you’re doing we genuinely care about your answer. Your answer to how are you doing tells us how good of a job we’re doing at taking care of you. Unfortunately, care taking outside of medicine is usually more complicated.” Those opening lines by Meredith Grey, protagonist of Grey’s Anatomy, sets up its most recent episode, “Everyday Angel”. Spoilers for the episode follows.

The episode follows Grey’s activeness in an unexpected light. The acclaimed surgeon takes a personal day, which she spends with Teddy Altman. After hearing that Altman is pregnant with Owen’s, she found that an intervention was necessary.

“Everyday Angel” also sheds light on the relationship and encounters amongst the other doctors. Alex Karev is shown to have a difficult time warming up to new to the new “Ortho God” and long lost friend of his wife, Link. Additionally, tension rises between DeLuca and Webber. After the firing of intern Vikram Roy for his inattentiveness, Webber seeks to ensure that DeLuca keeps an eye on the interns. DeLuca finds himself struggling to not do too much or too little. Additionally, Maggie and Bailey, although in different situations, find themselves in similar predicaments. Maggie can’t see her own faults in her recent row with Jackson and Bailey initially proves unable to realize the root of her distraction, which is taking away from her fellowship with Jo.

Reflecting back on Grey’s opening quote, in accordance to their personal lives, a majority of doctors can’t seem to answer the question “how are you doing?” for themselves. Each character is prompted with a tough problem, where the solution isn’t as simple as a pill or a shot.

With it’s narration and dialogue, this Grey’s Anatomy episode is not only able to describe the difficulty in addressing matters of introspection, it’s always able to better cement details of character development in not only the actions but the reactions of the characters.
