In his most recent album, pop-rocker James Bay introduces the world to a fresh side of his musical genius. Always looking to surprise people, Bay created Electric Light, a timeless album that is both everything and nothing like his previous album, Chaos and the Calm.

Electric Light is a clear beginning to a new era that digs a little deeper into a more rock-and-roll sound, full of bold and honest lyrics and guitar riffs to die for. This album establishes an age of transformation in Bay’s musical sound as well as general aesthetic through 14 tracks consisting of 12 songs, an introduction, and an interlude.

With his lead single “Wild Love,” Bay shows how much he has grown as an artist through unapologetic yet simple declarations of passion. In the music video, Bay uses the imagery of butterflies to symbolize a free and unattainable love that has the capability of making a person feel as though they have butterflies in their stomach.

He makes another deep statement with released single, “Us.” This delicately romantic song centers around the themes of hope as a source of strength and faith in love as a means of conquering hardships and overcoming adversity.

The majority of the songs on Electric Light give off vibes of untethered intensity through straightforward lyrics full of raw and simple emotion. For instance, Bay depicts the freedom of youth through nostalgic images of reckless naïveté in his song “Sugar Drunk High.”

Furthermore, in the iconically candid single “Pink Lemonade,” Bay brilliantly contrasts the darkness of his previous album with a more upbeat and carefree spirit, while still maintaining a certain level of angst.

With songs and messages that deserve to be played on repeat for days on end, Electric Light is a musical experience that is hard to get enough of.
