College Freshman Reflection

Always be curious; there are so many opportunities and events on campus that can help you to explore your future. Whether it is a workshop, presentation, or a department get-together, you never know what you might learn or who you might meet that helps to form your path or perspective. Even in my third year of college, I am still learning about new resources that are offered. Especially now, it is important to keep up-to-date on your college’s announcements; whether your college communicates with its students via email or an app, make sure to check for announcements daily.

Colleges offer lots of activities and opportunities to reach a wide range of students. The vague “getting involved” in your freshman year is a way to help freshmen adjust to the new environment. That does not mean you have to go out every night, stick with the same club for the next three years, or even make your best friends in the first semester. Take a breath—I know that you are most likely overwhelmed with information, and if you are not now, you will be. Know that you do not need to do everything right away; your college path will most likely deviate from your original plan—and that is good! It is all part of the process.

Last but not least, I encourage you to advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; every college has a system to support student needs, from mental health to career growth. We all are excited to support you in your growth—all you need to do is ask! Overtime, you will start to build a support system of friends, mentors, and persons who help you grow and explore these opportunities.
