Brain Food

Brain health is determined greatly by what we eat. It’s an extremely important factor for combating mental illness to those of us who suffer from one (or more), and it helps everyone, with or without mental illness, have greater clarity and overall mental stamina. Here’s a short tally of some of the best foods for brain health, compiled from what I’ve found to be the most helpful. I’ve included food that will work perfectly for vegetarians and vegans as well.

First and foremost is fish. I know it isn’t an option for some people, but this is, in my experience, the ultimate food for brain health, both in terms of mood and focus. Fish contains Omega-3, a fat that is considered by some people as the ultimate nutrient in maintaining brain health. There is absolutely an alternative for those who do not eat fish; flax and chia seeds are also high in this fatty acid, as are walnuts.

Speaking of nuts, they’re just great overall. When I was doing some research for this article, I found a number of nuts (namely almonds) are high in vitamin E, which also helps maintain healthy skin. Cashews contain magnesium, another brain booster. So anyone and everyone who likes nut milk, keep on pouring.

Next, while technically a drink and not a food, is green tea. The focus I get after drinking green tea sometimes surprises me. This is due to the caffeine, and in green tea, there is a lesser amount than in coffee. I personally prefer jasmine green tea with a little bit of honey added.

Finally we come to chocolate. Yes, chocolate. Dark chocolate especially. Chocolate encourages the release of endorphins, the “feel-good” chemical. Dark chocolate also contains flavonoids, a kind of antioxidant, which improves blood flow, which is always a bonus for your brain. Just enjoy responsibly.

If your brain isn’t healthy, your body isn’t truly healthy. The brain is the powerhouse of your body, an engine, and you want to keep your body engine as fine tuned as you keep your car engine.
