Beachside Charm

With Earth Day coming right around the corner, I’d like to highlight one of my personal favorite hidden gems of California: Dillon Beach. At the bottom of Bodega Bay and at the northern Marin County coastal border in Northern California, this beach offers a variety of terrain and activities.

The beach has a long stretch of soft sand and low shallow waters, perfect for people of all ages to wade in and take a stroll. When the tide is low and the surf is calm, tide pool exploration can be a great way to spend the day, and when the waves start to roll in, boogie boarding and surfing are a relaxing way to cool off. To the left of the entrance to the beach towards Tomales Bay, there are extensive sand dunes that give a perfect view of the Pacific Ocean from the top. Lined with soft beachgrass to block the winds that occur in the off season, they make for a wonderful backdrop or place for exploration.

The beach is dog friendly and is near Lawson’s Landing, which hosts numerous activities such as fishing, clamming, kayaking, biking, hiking, camping, and birdwatching. I can’t think of a better way to appreciate the natural beauties the earth has in store.

After a day at this beautiful beach, one may head up to the quaint town of Dillon Beach, which is home to a general store and cafe, post office, and several dozen pastel beach houses with weathered picket fences. The town rests at the end of a seaside nest of twisting narrow roads and rolling green hills.

Founded in the 1880s by George Dillon, Dillon Beach hasn’t seen much change since 1926, and contains a close knit community where the people are inviting and friendly. If you’re looking for a new beach to explore, or a wonderful scene to celebrate Earth Day, Dillon Beach is the place!
