In June of 2017, Netflix released the incredible heartwarming Okja, which immediately charmed viewers.

Attributed by many to be a modern-day Charlotte’s Web, this tale of a young Korean girl and her pet super-pig goes deeper than surface level and into the meaning of family and truth. When young Mija (Seo-Hyeon Ahn) learns of the fate of her genetically-bred pet pig Okja, she runs away from home and has to overcome language barriers, betrayal, and a multimillion dollar corporation to save Okja.

In addition to the main plot, viewers also see the villainization of big-name corporations through the interactions within the Mirando Corporation, the company that seeks to use Okja as an example of their advances in genetically-modified foods. Although Okja is categorized as a family film because of its plot, it beautifully addresses everything from the ethicality of the meat industry and corporations in general to the loyalty of family, blood or otherwise, with its well-developed characters and very real conflicts.
